What Is Technical SEO?

Technical SEO covers everything that determines whether a search engine can find, access, load and correctly understand your website — before content quality or backlinks come into play at all. If Google can't crawl a page, or crawls it and can't tell what it's about, nothing else matters yet.

What it actually covers

Crawlability and indexability. Google has to be able to reach your pages (via internal links, sitemap, no accidental blocks in robots.txt) and then decide they're worth adding to its index (no accidental noindex tags, no duplicate-content confusion).

Site architecture. A logical URL and folder structure, with internal links that pass authority to the pages that matter, rather than burying important pages five clicks deep.

Structured data. JSON-LD markup that tells search engines explicitly what a page is — an organization, a service, an article, a set of breadcrumbs — rather than making them guess from the text.

Core Web Vitals and performance. How fast a page loads, how quickly it becomes interactive, and how much its layout shifts around while loading. These are measured, not estimated, and they factor into both rankings and whether a visitor sticks around.

Mobile and HTTPS. Parity between the mobile and desktop experience, served securely by default.

Why it's usually invisible until it's a problem

Technical SEO issues rarely announce themselves. A site can look completely normal in a browser while a canonical tag is quietly telling Google to ignore half its pages, or a JavaScript-rendered menu is invisible to a crawler that doesn't execute scripts the way a browser does. That's why an audit — actually checking Search Console, crawling the site the way a search engine would, and reviewing the technical basics — is the starting point, not an afterthought.
